Frequently Asked Questions

How long will I have to stay?

The average length of stay for patients wishing to detox from drugs and/or alcohol is 3 to 5 days. Occasionally, a patient may require longer to complete the process. Someone participating in the Adult Chemical Dependency Rehabilitation Program may stay as long as a month; however, treatment is always provided on an individual basis, so participation may be shorter. Adults in the Acute Psychiatric Program may be here an average of 10 to 12 days. Again, some patients leave more quickly, while others may stay longer. Adolescents in the Psychiatric Acute Program stay for an average of two weeks, with some variation related to individual progress and circumstances. The Adolescent Chemical Dependency Program is designed to meet individual needs. It can last as long as eight weeks. This hospital also offers Extended Care Treatment for adolescents who have had multiple hospitalizations or in danger of being removed from their home environment and could benefit from longer term treatment with a slower transition home. Although it is possible that a young person could stay as long as 180 days, length of stay at Cumberland Hall for this program most usually does not extend beyond 90 days.

How much therapy do patients receive?

There are many therapeutic opportunities provided every day to patients. Multiple groups are led by doctoral and master’s level therapists, as well as psycho-education groups led by our direct care staff. Additionally, there is at least one Recreational Therapy group daily. For those entering the hospital with substance abuse problems, there are groups addressing these issues. Patients will meet with their primary therapist at least one time to complete the psychosocial assessment. Adults may request additional individual time and are encouraged to agree to a family therapy session and/or a session with their unit leaders for active duty Soldiers. In addition to meeting with licensed professionals, this hospital utilizes milieu therapy. Many patients find that they receive a good deal of support and healing as they talk with other patients. Medication therapy is also provided, and patients can expect to meet with their psychiatrist on a daily basis. Nurses are deeply involved in patient care and are available to listen and assist, as are our direct care staff.

What about family involvement and visiting schedules?

While Cumberland Hall highly encourages family members to participate in treatment through the use of therapist-facilitated family therapy sessions, we limit visitation hours to allow our patients to fully concentrate on their treatment programs. Visitation is on Saturday.

Military Adult Patients: 8 to 9 p.m.
Adolescent Females: 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Adolescent Males: 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Can I receive telephone calls during my stay?

Adult patients may use a community phone on the unit to make outgoing. Telephone calls are limited to 10 minutes to give all patients the opportunity to make a call. Adults may receive incoming calls between 7 to 8 a.m. and 7 to 8:15 p.m. Callers must have the patient’s access code when calling.

Adolescent patients may not receive incoming calls, but are allowed to make 5 minute calls to family members or others on your “approved call” list from the community phone on Monday and Friday evenings. Parents or guardians with a patient’s access code may call and speak with a staff member to check the status of loved ones.

There is no charge for local calls and long-distance calls.
